If you’ve been thinking to yourself, “sup with this breakdance yoga thing and flash mobs???”
Let me share with you the real motivation behind what I am doing and perhaps beyond all the Gaga and the hype you will note a strong belief in the potential for bringing people together. So why Breakti? Read on.
Breakti aligns the nuance, wisdom in detail, and philosophy of asana with the inherent dynamism, wisdom in rhythm, and celebration in the music and movement surrounding street dance culture. By linking yoga and street dance on a physical, intellectual and spiritual level, Breakti creates a bridge between the two vernaculars, allowing crossover between the gross and subtle, the popular and underground, the physical and the spiritual. Breakti opens a gateway into the vocabularies of asana, movement, and rhythm for all people of all walks of life by creating connections and highlighting those qualities in movement and musical expression that unite us all.
Why this Flash Mob style event??
It is a very important question and one I’ve spent some time with in the last month as I have grappled with how I can create something that doesn’t dumb down yoga or dance or movement, but allows people to have a new experience of all of these things in a format that is accessible on a large scale. What I’ve come up with is this: I think that anything that allows people to look at movement and our physical relationship to rhythm in a new way is valuable. Part of the mission of Breakti is” to open gateways into the vocabularies of asana, movement, and rhythm for all people of all walks of life by creating connections and highlighting those qualities in movement and musical expression that unite us all”. This experiment is all about that. I also see this taking on many forms and eventually becoming an outlet for social messages and important causes. I would love to team up with other people who are doing unbelievably inspiring work like the activism crew at Interdependence Project and the amazing work being done with BeatNYC.org This medium and format is about getting people excited and interested in body consciousness, the universal language of rhythm and music, and social consciousness… There is a lot that we can do with that and I think we have a whole lot more to say. So stay tuned for the next B.O.M.!!!
A big shout out to the Well+Good ladies, specifically Lisa, for helping me formulate my thoughts in words around this topic. Read their fab article here.
Lots of love,
